Three pupils die at school for deaf
26 Aug 2015
Leeudoringstad – Three pupils died and 53 were admitted to hospital for smoke inhalation and injuries when a fire demolished a school hostel at the North West School for the Deaf at Leeudoringstad in Maquassi
hills on Monday, 24 August 2015, at about 01:00.
Major PelonomiMakau, police spokesperson, said three girls, aged 16, 17 and 18 respectively, died. Some of the pupils were injured when they jumped out of the first-floor windows to escape from the fire.
Elias Malindi, media liaison manager of the Department of Education and Sport development in North West, said an alarm rang but because of their disability the pupils could not hear it.
The injured pupils were rushed to a hospital in Wolmaransstad.
The fire is said to have destroyed an administration block which is connected
to the hostel, computer lab and teachers flats in which two have been seriously
damaged by fire.Makau said according to initial reports, 22 computers and an unconfirmed number of lap tops were burnt.
The school is closed for the forensic investigation to be completed and the pupils are accommodated at other schools in the province.
Major General Jacob Tsumane, acting provincial commissioner, conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and injured children. “We will ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted to determine the cause of this horrific incident.”
The DA’s Dr Tutu Faleni visited the school on Monday, and urged Wendy Matsemela, MEC of the department, to start an immediate investigation into the incident.
This tragedy follows three weeks after two learners and an assistant teacher died in
a horrific accident after their mini bus lost control and rolled several times injuring six
passengers on the road between Orkney and Leeudoringstad on Sunday, 02 August
2015.
