DA warned about water wastage, poor maintenance
20 Aug 2015
Klerksdorp - Thousands of litres of clean, drinking water is going to waste due to negligence and poor maintenance from the Matlosana Municipality, warns Willie Louwrens, a DA councillor in Matlosana. On Friday 14 August 2015, residents of Stilfontein woke up without water in their homes. This follows after water started to spurt out at a pipe at the Mooi Street Reservoir in Stilfontein West, late on Thursday, 13 August.Louwrens said the DA warned the council numerous times on the maintenance of both the Mooi Street Reservoir and Jan van Riebeeck Avenue reservoirs. The latter supplies Stilfontein East with water. He said the DA challenged the council about issues like the lack of fencing, infrastructure faults, the telemetry system and the threat of water-related diseases. The telemetry system is used to control the water levels and filling of the reservoir. The system in Mooi Street has been out of order for the last four years. It will cost approximately R13 million to fix it.In February this year, the DA followed up on promises that problems would be fixed. To date no maintenance or repairs have taken place. Louwrens said old water pipes are another huge concern as the current leak is caused by rusty pipes. There was an attempt to weld the broken main water pipe without any success. The pipes couldn’t handle the water pressure. As a result, the water supply was turned off to stop any further influx and to let the pipes dry to allow the workers to make another attempt to fix the leak. “This is another example of bad planning and budgeting. There is very little pro-active planning from the Matlosana council resulting in not only the waste of a scarce resource, but also of taxpayers’ money.”He said the DA will discuss the growing crisis in North West municipalities with Collen Maine, MEC for Local Government, and Premier Supra Mahumapelo.
